Every year I scratch my head and try to come up with a new gadget, or olive oil, or obscure peppercorn from inner Toledo, and every year I come back to the same thing--a book. For me, there is nothing more endearing and personal than your pick of something you’ve loved and used over the years. Flag a few recipes and it is becomes even more intimate. Here is a short list of my most spattered, torn, and well-thumbed. I’m forcing myself to stop at ten. The Splendid Table, by Lynne Rossetto Kasper. This book was so bewitching I was compelled to call her, and thus the radio show was born. Lynne is a stickler for details and is one of the best recipe writers around. Every single recipe in this book works, I swear. The Art of Mexican Cooking, by Diana Kennedy. Another obsessive-compulsive like the above-mentioned Lynne. This book is full of history and culture and opinion and she writes recipes and technique in clear precise terms. The new edition came out in 2008 The read more »

Palazzo Versace Plans Refrigerated Beach - Luxist Get the perfect Travel Gadget for the jetsetter on your list! Palazzo Versace Plans Refrigerated Beach Posted Dec 14th 2008 6:02PM by Deidre Woollard In order to keep the sand cool the beach will be built on a network of pipes which will contain a heat-absorbing coolant. The system will be controlled by thermostats linked to computers to keep the beach at the optimum temperature for enjoyment at all times. As you might assume, environmentalists are up in arms about this luxurious enhancement in an area already known for having a huge carbon footprint due to the need to keep things cool. After all, the scorching hot city already has an indoor ski slope. Scott E-vest offers the latest in geek-wear with a multi-pocket vest that can hold just about every gadget you own. George Orwell missed a key element of technological progress and its impact on society when he predicted in his book 1984 that Big Brother would monitor society via video cameras installed and controlled by government. As it turns out, we do a pretty good job of monitoring ourselves with Webcams, surveillance video, and cell phones. But the art form is well on its way toward ubiquity with the advent of a new breed of video cameras that records better video quality than most cell phones, at the expense of real-time upload. This category of video cameras started with the ultimately pocketable Flip about a year ago and has expanded to today's lineup of five competitors that share the same general form factor. The main distinction of these cameras is their small size and their production of YouTube-ready video clips. Their size makes it easy to slip one in a pocket along read more »

If you skipped the sales on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, don't worry. Excellent deals are still being offered all the time and should continue right up to Christmas. Televisions. The prices on TVs are better this year than in the past because even brand-name sets are marked down, says de Grandpre. Usually it's the low-end, no-name brands that go on sale. But de Grandpre says that he has seen Samsung, Sharp and Panasonic 46-inch LCD and 50-inch plasma TVs for less than $1,000. A year ago, similar TVs sold for $1,300 to $1,500. GPS. Last year, a basic GPS navigation system cost $150. Now, low-end models are going for $50, and basic systems from industry leaders, such as Garmin and TomTom, are $100. Computers. PCs have been heavily discounted for a while. So rather than slash prices still more for the holiday season, retailers will give you more bang for your buck by offering additional memory and features at no extra charge, says Kevin Strawbridge, president of Deal read more »
