For me, there is nothing more endearing and personal than your pick of something you’ve loved and used over the years. Flag a few recipes and it is becomes even more intimate. Here is a short list of my most spattered, torn, and well-thumbed. I’m forcing myself to stop at ten. The Splendid Table, by Lynne Rossetto Kasper. This book was so bewitching I was compelled to call her, and thus the radio show was born. Lynne is a stickler for details and is one of the best recipe writers around. Every single recipe in this book works, I swear. The Art of Mexican Cooking, by Diana Kennedy. Another obsessive-compulsive like the above-mentioned Lynne. This book is full of history and culture and opinion and she writes recipes and technique in clear precise terms. The new edition came out in 2008 The

11 Vote(s)

George Orwell missed a key element of technological progress and its impact on society when he predicted in his book 1984 that Big Brother would monitor society via video cameras installed and controlled by government. As it turns out, we do a pretty good job of monitoring ourselves with Webcams, surveillance video, and cell phones. But the art form is well on its way toward ubiquity with the advent of a new breed of video cameras that records better video quality than most cell phones, at the expense of real-time upload. This category of video cameras started with the ultimately pocketable Flip about a year ago and has expanded to today's lineup of five competitors that share the same general form factor. The main distinction of these cameras is their small size and their production of YouTube-ready video clips. Their size makes it easy to slip one in a pocket along

6 Vote(s)

The days of poop-behind-a-rock be gone - a Nepali climber has recently started promoting the use of a packable toilet for hikers up the world's tallest mountain. Tired of the 965 kilos of waste he picked up during an expedition in May (including a corpse dating back to 1972! wtf!), Dawa Steven Sherpa is determined to make Mt. Everest a cleaner place. This way, hikers will have a potty to sit on (plus!) but poop to haul out (not so much plus). The bags do their job to keep unwanted aromas from reaching expeditionists while they hike. Director Charles Stone III reunited the cast for a satirical look at how their lives have worsened under the Bush era, eight years on from the original. Included in the list are Guy Ritchie’s advert for Nike football and advert about a gay Adam frustrating Eve that was banned from TV. So, if you think you have enough wrapping paper to scrape by this season, don't grab a roll at the register just in case you need it. If you're not sure who is on your gift list, don't buy boxes of candy or bottles of wine to have on hand just in case. If it's a gadget that nobody's asked for, you probably don't need it. If it's another piece of jewelry, and nobody's asked for it, you probably don't need it. If it's a T-shirt with the words "Got Pierogi?" on it -- and nobody's got a recipe for pierogi -- you don't need it. It's more than OK to make due this year with what you've got. • Buy just one.
Apple's future touchscreens to feel your presence The easy-to-use technologies developed by Apple engender an almost religious fervour in some of the company's followers. Now it would appear that Apple's touchscreen technology is about to get smarter still, becoming able to detect a finger that is simply near but not touching a point on the screen. That will add a new dimension to touchscreen gadgets. For example, letting your finger do the same job as hovering your mouse over an item on a computer to reveal extra info. Right now, there's no way to do that. But imagine the uses it could have on a phone. The touchscreen button that connects you to the web could tell you how busy your 3G connection is as your finger approaches. Giving you forewarning of likely download speed. Apple's trick is spelt out in this patent application (pdf). The idea is to embed a thicket of infrared LEDs and light-sensors into the touchscreen circuitry. The invisible infrared light from the LEDs bounces

5 Vote(s)

In the 12 months through October, e-commerce grew a meager 1%, compared with 20% a year earlier, according to ComScore (SCOR). And don't blame it all on the recession. Many of the best-known, most-used sites have been around almost as long as the Internet itself, or at least since the dot-com era. But what about some of the cool up-and-comers? With the oversaturation of options, you have to be extremely plugged in, or very adept at finding needles within the proverbial haystack. Here are three of the potentially hottest up-and-coming Web sites. All three are in "beta" mode, which indicates there could be room for improvement or that access is limited. However, may want to keep these sites on your radar, as to take advantage once they are up and running full-steam. From movie serials in the 40's, to a classic campy TV show in the 60's, to a solid animated series in the 90's, fans have thrilled to the super heroics of this unique character. However, as a film franchise, he has brought results that were somewhat less than impressive creatively. While the Tim Burton directed films, BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS were stylish and dark, they also suffered from plot holes you could drive a Batmobile through. Then Joel Schumacher introduced a Day-Glo sensibility to the Dark Knight in BATMAN FOREVER, before drowning the character in ludicrous costumes (a Bat suit with nipples???), pun-filled foes, and whiney sidekicks in the lousy BATMAN & ROBIN. The way ’official information’ is regularly leaked these days, we’ve got no reason to dispute that. If you think you might have seen that front end before you’d be right - the new E-Class bears more than a passing resemblance to MB’s ConceptFasionation shown early in September. If these images are accurate, the most notable change up front is the replacement of MB’s round quad-headlight setup; there are still four lights but the angular treatment changes the aesthetic markedly. The LED driving lights continue the styling theme - seems something of a trend in the premium German marques. The side profile has been refined and now features a sweeping waist and roof-line which should provide superior rear occupant space. The rear of the car however appears a little fussy and cops the same angular lines and LED treatment seen up front. The new

9 Vote(s)

A home phone that puts the latest information at your fingertips feels like an old sci-fi staple, but now AT&T Inc. has a $299 touch-screen gadget, called HomeManager, that brings the idea to fruition. It may be coming too late in the game to matter. As if it were a cell phone, the HomeManager is a touch-screen device that taps into the Internet to monitor e-mail, dig up the latest news and sports scores and access other Web favorites. Yet HomeManager does all that while connected to a home phone line. The result is a crisp device that's surprisingly easy to use and fairly handy. Indeed, it's like an iPhone for your landline. Transparent resistive random access memory, or TRRAM, "is not intended as a replacement of conventional [silicon-based] memory technology but has potential for novel electronic applications in the near future," the paper states. "Thus, we expect a transparent embedded system with see-through memory to become a paradigm of future electronic devices." Clear, flat-screen televisions represent one such possible device, assuming the research can be applied to other electronic components. TRRAM can provide nonvolatile memory just like the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) memory chips that are currently used in USB flash drives. According to the paper, TRRAM should be able to store data for 10 years. Recent developments in ferroelectric NAND flash technology promise up to a 100 million read/write cycles. "It is a new milestone of tr

14 Vote(s)

After a few days with the unit, I'll let the storm pass and wait for the next round. It's a great device with great potential, but I just don't see it being there yet. Typically, when I get any device I try to use it right out of the box (without reading instructions), because that's what most of you do. I'll then use the quick start guide that comes with just about everything these days and then move on to the main instruction book. To me, the device is a phone first, source to read e-mail second and everything else third. So right out of the box, I wanted to make a phone call, but it wasn't that easy since the opening screen wasn't the numerical keypad. With a little (talk) button pushing, I did find the keypad to make a call.
The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralyzed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman.
Final Release Of Google's Chrome Ready For Prime Time? In a recent interview, Google VP Marissa Mayer commented that the company's Chrome browser will be exiting beta status and be offered as a 1.0 release. What say ye, Chrome users, is it good enough? I have been using Chrome on my Windows machine intermittently over the past two months. In general I like it, but am still waiting for Google to roll out a version for Apple OS. The Windows beta version has been around for about three months and already has seen a few updates. Speaking to TechCrunch's Michael Arrington at Le Web 08 in Paris, Mayer spilled the beans that a 1.0 release of Chrome is on the way, though she didn't say how soon it would be available. Google has really been ramping up the capabilities of its platforms lately, especially products such as Gmail. Google recently added a Gmail gadget to its desktop program for Windows, Google added video chatting capabilities to GChat, and is still working to bring IM-based S

17 Vote(s)
